As you may already know, aquaponics works on the symbiotic relationship that is established naturally between the plants and aquatic animals. A mini ecosystem is created and the re-cycling of wastes as fertilizers for the plants occurs. In essence it really combines hydroponics technology with agriculture. The question lies, what’s the best aquaponics plants for the system?

Growbeds are used to grow plants in aquaponics and instead of soil, river rocks and clay pebbles are popularly used as the growing media. Here, water is continuously run through the system to provide the plants with a nutrient rich environment to thrive on. So, what plants do well with aquaponics?

There are over three hundred different types of plant varieties that have been tested to grow well with aquaponics. The variety that does not seem to do so well with this system is root vegetables. These are plants that are produced under ground, like potatoes, onions and the like.

The variety that do well with aquaponics are generally the leafy plants and anything that grows well on soil really. Plants like cucumbers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, bok-choi, kai lan, spinach and lettuce do very well with the system.

Salads in the likes of shallots, chiles, snow peas, red salad onions and capsium normally have the greatest success with aquaponics. All the beans do well too, along with broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant and cabbage have very good success rates and they grow easily too.

One the most productive and easiest plants to grow in aquaponics are herbs. Any kind of herbs that is, they grow like wild flowers. Basil, watercress, coriander, lemongrass, sage and parsley all work well. Do bear in mind though that if you have an open system, your plant choice is always subject to the climate and weather conditions of the place you live in.

You can change that however, with the use of greenhouses. With a greenhouse, you are in control of the environment, it gives you the flexibility to tune the environment to your plants needs. Hence, the flexibility to choose the plant varieties you like regardless of the weather outside.

Now, these are just a few examples of aquaponics plants you can have for your system. You can try all the plants that come to mind and see how they turn out. Have fun with it and be creative about it too. Flowers grow well with aquaponics too and I mean all types of flowers with that.

You can have a mix of herbs and plants in your growbed to go with, or a mix of a variety of flowers even. Roses grow really well here and they come with incredible colours that make your face glow every time you look at them. If flowers work for you, aquaponics will as well.

The sky is the limit with aquaponics really. The limiting factors come in the form of the type of aquaponics system that you choose and the type of growbed that you go with. I mean, as I have mentioned earlier, have fun with it and experiment with what grows best with your environment.

Hope this helps to give you some added ideas of what you can do with aquaponics. Feel free to write a comment or two below and I’ll come back to you soonest…cheers!
